In order to develop as a Substance Misuse Worker, you will need to build up your skills and knowledge. You can do this by going on relevant training courses and practical experience. A good way of gaining practical experience is by volunteering – see this section for more information. Many of the Substance Misuse organisations in Sussex provide their training and development in house. If you are thinking about working in the substance misuse sector then it is important to understand how the sector is made up in order to choose what type of work and employment that would suit you. The sector is made up mainly of statutory (public sector) services such as the NHS, Education, Probation Service, etc and Independent/ voluntary sector organisations in Sussex for example these includes Addaction, CRI, Brighton Oasis Project, etc. Employment usually cuts across 3 main bodies of organisations.
