This City and Guilds Training Course is run at 2 colleges in Sussex and supports both new workers and volunteers with their work. As the award is practice based, students need to have paid or voluntary work in the drug and alcohol sector before starting the course, it is recommended that voluntary work is for a minimum of 4 hours per week. Action For Change

Action for Change is a voluntary sector provider of adult alcohol and drug services, and a provider of a range of specialist services to chaotic and problematic young people. We provide a range of services for adults, including assessment, brief interventions, structured counselling and structured group programmes. Our philosophy is to reduce the harm from the alcohol and drug use. For drinkers this means that we will both work to achieve a drink free lifestyle, and to achieve a controlled drinking state.
We have a stron tradition of working with other organisations to provide the care for individuals, and we have an excellent reputation for our work with statutory services. A number of our paid staff are employed by us, but seconded to another host organisation.
We offer comprehensive training for all who work for us, and are accredited by the Open College Network for our training.
We have always had a number of volunteers ‘working’ for us. Unlike many organisations, our volunteers have a specific role in that they provide the structured counselling for our clients. We recruit and train a new group each year, who go on to work in either our Eastbourne or Hastings offices. All our volunteer counsellors receive 1:1 counselling supervision from qualified supervisors. Many of our volunteers go on to get paid employment either with us or associated services. It is an excellent career pathway.
It is important to stress that we always seek to recruit a mixed group of volunteers, for example some will be training to be a counsellor, some will have skills appropriate for the work but no formal qualifications, and some will be former problematic alcohol and drug users not because of this status, but because they bring the right balance of skills and empathy for the client group.

Brighton Housing Trust - BHT - is dedicated to addressing the problem of homelessness and associated problems in Brighton, Hove, and Eastbourne. We aim to, enable people to live independent lives, and believe that everybody needs appropriate housing whether as a starting point or an end goal. We provide services to address the causes and effects of poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, and poor mental and physical health. BHT’s Addiction Services consist of four residential services providing a comprehensive programme of support for men and women who seek abstinence and recovery from their addiction to drugs and alcohol. The project aims to help people rebuild their lives following addiction, addressing any blocks which may prevent the enjoyment of a positive, drug and alcohol free life.

Family & Friends Project

The ‘Families and Friends Project’ provides relatives, and anyone else who may be affected by someone’s substance misuse, with a number of free and confidential options: Information about drugs and alcohol advice and information about what you can do and where you can go if you are affected by someone else’s substance use. Contact with other people who are going through a similar experience through local support groups and /or drop in services. Individual 1-1 support. Freephone telephone helpline open 7 days a week, 10am to 10pm. Training and workshops to families AND to services working with families affected by drugs and alcohol Annual conference – “Emotional Rollercoaster” . The drop in services aim to provide a safe place, where people can receive free information and support from a team of friendly advisors. Refreshments are provided and our friendly volunteer advisors are well trained and non judgemental. There is also a confidential policy so people can speak in confidence. Drop-Ins are held in Bognor Regis, Worthing, Horsham, Crawley and Soutwick. Refer to our main Website for details.

Phoenix Futures

We serve people in many different community settings, working in partnership with voluntary and statutory agencies to deliver specialist drug and alcohol services that best meet the individual's needs. Our experience lies in working with drug and alcohol misusers who have a long history of problematic substance abuse and who often feel socially excluded from the community in which they live. We employ over 370 staff, mainly in care and treatment positions. We work with people who wish to reduce, end or take control of their drug or alcohol use. Whilst we are committed to eventual abstinence, we recognise that a range of services and approaches are essential. The services we deliver reflect the wide-ranging needs of our clients. In Brighton, We provide services to families, where the parents are substance misusers. Our services are quite unique. We provide residential rehabilitation services for families accessible by not only women with children but men also. We also focus on working with families in their own homes. Through our experience and valuing the individuals we serve, Phoenix Futures works to respond to the shifting needs of substance misusers and the society in which we live. Delivering effective services that help individuals to become independent integrated members of society remains our primary focus.

West Sussex Youth Offending Service

Social care work is about helping people with their lives - often providing practical support to help people with physical and psychological problems cope with the everyday business of living. It doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, or your academic qualifications, somewhere in your community there's a job that you can do helping others which would turn into a rewarding career.
West Sussex Youth Offending Service is seeking foster carers to work with young people aged between 10-17 who are going through the youth justice system and need short term care. The Youth Offending Service runs Alternative to Custody (A2C), a fostering scheme designed to provide temporary accommodation for young people who are · Awaiting a trial or sentencing in the youth justice courts. · Are granted early release from custody. · Are sentenced to an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme and need accommodation for the first three months of this sentence because they require a high level of support during this period.
A2C foster carers receive payment and training and work as part of a professional team. The scheme is looking for male or female carers, single or couples from all backgrounds and ethnic groups. It needs people who are:
· Experienced in parenting, caring or working with young people aged 10 – 17.· Flexible and willing to provide a home for a young person at short notice.· Able to work with a young person in a crisis.· Available during the day or have a partner who can be available. Applications to become a foster carer for the A2C scheme should be made directly to Sarah White, Family Placement Social. |

Worthing Churches Homeless Projects

Started in 1991 by four local Christians who took soup, blankets and sleeping bags to the seafront to local homeless people. From this small beginning Worthing Churches Homeless Projects was born. Today this Christian charity has grown to 40 staff members and over 250 volunteers and provides a range of services, which offer opportunities to regain independence.
Currently we are only seeking to recruit volunteers who have a few available hours in the week to help with administration duties and telephone calls. If you are able to assist us with this role we would love to hear from you. |
